Yeah, so, I decided I should probably add something here because, well, I think I pay some money for some of this crap. I might as well entertain myself with it.
I sure as hell ain't gettin' a Myspace page.
I thought about gettnig an ac count just to continue my monopoly on junkpc, the username, but...eh. I did that with LJ, and look what happened. For a while, I couldn't make up my mind about where to post.

You know, I was going to type something else right then, but it occurred to me how much I hate the touchpad on this laptop. I am constantly hitting it and end up typing shit in the middle of something else. That sucks.

I might start typing something meaningful in here at some point. Maybe turn this into a 'horrible parenting' news aggregate of some sort.

Time for an early bed. I'm tired.

...and no, I am not referring to that wonderful piece of musical genius about the Steelers.
Today, I am taking the first half of the CompTIA A+ test. This is the first test I have taken in more than 5 years. To say I'm a little nervous would likely be accurate.
I mean, I think I have an ok grasp of the material, for the most part. Slot something, socket that, female 25 pin, don't park near the fire hydrant. Right.
Anyway, wish me luck.

1) I severely underestimated the sheer amount of crap that baby stores try to sell to newly expecting parents. I think it's a function of not knowing what the hell one actually needs.

2) I guess I paid enough attention to the stories of overtly horrible parenting that I completely missed the parents that act as if the child and the accompanying equipment are a fashion accessory. wtf?

I have to figure out where the balance will be... either that or just follow the lead of Mrs Junkpc and just hold on for the ride.

Well, good evening.
We have worked hard for a good number of days, and had some help, so the house is finally somewhat presentable for the first annual Junkpc Decemberween extravaganza.
Well, it's maybe not all that.
It's just Mrs Junkpc's family.
... but it *is* here.

So I am finishing laundry, waiting for my brother to arrive from the shadows of a pollution creation factory somewhere in the wilds of Pennsyltucky, and catching up on sbemails. Yes, sbemails.
It's been a while, but the little guy still has it.
The emails are a lot longer than they used to be, though.

So, anyway, a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Awesome Kwanzaa, Crazy Yule, Slammin' Solstice, and a Thnikkaman Decemberween. I think I know why people say 'happy holidays'. I'm glad that it's not also administrative professional appreciation day as well. You know how easily offended *those* people are.

Ok, I have recently been watching Brainiac, because they are showing it on a channel which, until they started showing this show, I had a self-imposed boycott on. Anyway...
They did a bit where Dr Bunhead crushed a can with air pressure.
Here's how it was done:
Bit of water inside a coke can.
Bit of water in a tray - maybe an inch or so deep.
Heat the bottom of the coke can until steam comes out.
Quickly invert the can into the tray of water.
The can collapses.

Re: my server update issue, thanks for all the help. I have some good news. Like I said, I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798, and tried the first option, which was "ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\Edb.log *.tst" It worked. I was able to install the SBS BPA tool, and find out how much stuff I have done incorrectly. This list includes service packs and patches that I haven't done. The good thing is that I now have something to tell me what I need to do.

I'm still thinking about baby stuff; I've been researching video baby monitors - some of them have low-light cameras. Unfortunately, none of them have night vision. That would be really cool. One of them ( www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Handheld-Monitor-Screen/dp/B00020V5A2/ref=tag_dpp_lp_edpp_ttl_ex/102-8367388-7418562) has a portable screen which is pretty cool. I have a few others to check, but we still have a while yet.

Also, the carrier conundrum continues. A friend suggested that I not get something like this: www.gracobaby.com/products/category.asp?N=400+10417 because the infant seat part won't last very long. I was thinking that I could get 2 seat bases, one for each car. Another friend told me that these things are, in fact, awesome.

Unfortunately, this sort of choice is a lot like telling someone that knows nothing about cars to pick out a car to race in some type of endurance race. I mean, I know Graco is a brand, I know Toys R Us sells this stuff, but that's about it. I have a book that I need to look through - but again, I have a bit of time before I need those.

Oh look - a few lines of computer stuff, and lot of baby stuff. I'm willing to bet that this is some sort of eerie foreshadowing thing.

Yeah - that reminds me; I got some advice that scared me this week.
I was talking to a couple that had 2 kids in Charbucks, and the advice he offered was, "get sleep now."

Ok - I might elaborate on this later, but I am sort of tired at the moment, and should likely be sleeping.

Infants are very tiny.
The amount of stuff required for the mini-human is just un-be-freaking-lievable.
I have been looking over the transportation options, as it's my job to get the car seat, etc.
Holy crap!
The things I first thought about were combination car-seat, basket-carrier thing, and stroller. I have been told that it's likely that this may not last very long for the price.

Add to this, you have the portable bouncing seat, (do you need that?), the four wheel drive stroller, the la-z-boy car seat, the flux capacitor.... anyway - I obviously have a lot to learn.

I don't want to turn this into a baby-only site, but it's one of the bigger (well.... not physically bigger).. things going on in my life at the moment - so I'm going to talk about it.

Anyway - I'll go learn about that later. Right now, time to watch Dr. Bunhead for a few minutes and then go to sleep.

Family Expansion

Well, I debated how to phrase this for a bit - so here goes.
You all know that on here, I refer to my lovely wife as Mrs. Junkpc.
The is the first official web announcement that we will be bringing another life into the world.
No, we're not getting another kitten.... yet. Mrs. Junkpc is carrying our baby, who - because I am a nerd - I have decided to refer to as the VM (Virtual Machine) - because like a computer inside a computer, this is a person inside a person.
We are both pretty excited.
It was really ultra cool to see the first image of the little VM, and the power supply as just going insane - like a hummingbird. (and by power supply, I mean heart)
Hopefully, I can be a good administrator (to carry the metaphor ridiculously far), and we're hoping that we get a good disk image down; one with no virii or malware.

To take a phrase from Mr. Peter Griffin, "This is gonna be freakin' sweet"

So, I had this really depressing, melancholy post about some crap or another that I was moping about a while ago.

Well - screw that.

This is about science.

So, the inspiration of the day is this: I have 'been' Junkpc for a bit over 10 years, as well as I can remember. So, what about you?
Do you use one name - primarily - online as *your* name?
Do you try to make sure that you're the only one online?
How long have you had this name?
What was its origin - or when did you first use it?
Are you very attached to it?

My answers:
Yes - it's junkpc. I have one other that's a standby, and one that's well - pretty much my real name.
I do like to be the only junkpc. I think I am well on the way, except that I don't think I have Yahoo. I also haven't bothered with MySpace, either. (Think I should?)
Like I said before - about 10 years.
It originated on AOL - my first ISP. I don't remember what my first choices were that were rejected; I just know that I did not want numbers after whatever I got.
I think I am pretty attached to it; I mean, like I said before - I like having 'my' name.
I am junkpc - and that's how it is.

Feel free to pass this on - but I want some replies.

I have been in touch with various old (and some *very* old) friends recently. Some more than others. Some for short bursts of communication, then nothing for months.
Now, some questions to the crowd:
Have you ever found someone online (either accidentally or sought out) from your past?
Have you ever run into someone in 'real life' from your past after a very long absence?
If online, what did you do about it? (random email: "Hi - haven't seen you in a decade..."?; lurk?; call?; nothing?)
Do you make attempts to obfuscate your presence and/or activities online so that this does not happen to you?

Time for a brief update

Let's see - Where shall I begin?
Went to an O's game withe some friends. The Orioles, as they do, lost. But, we had a pretty good sandwich, and a pretty good night. There are pictures at images.junkpc.com, if you're interested.
Speaking of pictures, the ones I took at the game came out nowbere as nice as I thought they would. There's probably a mode on the samera, or something else I could have done, to make them come out better. I mean, we paid a good bit of money for a camera that can do lots of stuff - but I guess, like any tool, you have to know how to use it.
Which brings me to minirant time: When did it become the software designer or network administrator's job to make software work how you, the user, want it to? I mean, if button A does one thing, why in the hell would you blame the software vendor because button A does not do something else?? It's like using any other tool - you wouldn't try to shoot somebody with a rachet, would you?
How about this: let's find some brave soul to put some sort of welding tool in the hands of one of these people - and when they start to bitch because the fire doesn't go where they think it should, ask them to point it at their own face.
Grr.
Anyway, we also had a day of gaming planned with a friend and his new willing female companion (sorry, Jason - had to ). They drove up to where we live from somewhere in VA. Mrs. Junkpc claims that she missed the last step, causing a load of pain in her foot/ankle. Truth is that it was wife-beating day, and I got carried away.
Anyway, the short version is that our friends had to drive back home, we went to the Dr. to find out that she didn't break the ankle, she just sprained it *really*badly.
That made for a fun rest-of-the-weekend.
I never even want to think about interviewing for a butler job.
F that.
But seriously, she's feeling a bit better now, and will soon be back up to running enough to chase me down for the wife beating remark.

Ok - time to go read some more Harry Potter. I have 2 more books to go before 7 comes in, and they are the long ones.
Oh, and I have a PC to recussitate that I should have had done.... well.... long ago.
The owner's getting anxious.
Guess I'll do that tomorrow.
